I would sit by her and she would recite verbatim Shakespeare’s plays from beginning to end and poetry (Browning, etc.) for hours — Nancy Young, granddaughter. Emma Scott Raff, granddaughter of Joachim Raff, German composer from Stuttgart, Germany. Her family came to Canada and settled in Owen Sound. Emma Scott Raff married scientist George Nasmith (Col.) who was the first man to tell the troops in World War I to soak their handkerchiefs in their own urine…the first gas mask in World War I. He was a dwarf having drunk unpasteurized milk when young and as a scientist was in England during the first gas raid. He slept during the war in the bathtub of the Berkley Hotel [London]. Emma Scott Raff founded the Margaret Eaton School of Literature under the sponsorship of Lady Margaret Eaton. It was designed like the Parthenon in Greece and was on College St. It was a school of art and literature.”
